Best Luxury rehab centre alternative in South Africa

Best Luxury rehab centre alternative

The Best Luxury rehab centre alternative in South Africa is one that allows people to heal the underlying causes of their issues, that allows them not to be labeled and categorised in ways they don’t feel are constructive and that is a home away from home rather than an institution or drug rehab centre. On their own terms, in their own space while they maintain their autonomy, integrity and individual points of view. All these things tend to take a back seat in luxury rehab centres that simply have a mass of people thrown together on medical aid funds for 21 days at a time. Executive, luxury and private clients like our would never do any of that and have been left in a wasteland without the necessary help, backing and support of professional and modern, non-medical alternatives like ours.

“We created one of the most sophisticated recovery programs on the planet through 23 years of research and development into the personality and never expected to find what we found, which is common people who became stuck, doing uncommon healing and life change by following a simple system that changed everything. This system became the Paradigm Process of Addiction and Trauma Recovery”.

To sit in a crowd of 20 people who are all being taught the basics of addictions, especially for substances and alcohol or substances of some kind does not apply to people with process and behavioral addictions for example. Even more so to be people trying to heal their root causes of trauma, So the traumatic feeling on not fitting in does not apply at the Best Luxury rehab centre alternative in South Africa we have ever created.

We created one of the most sophisticated recovery programs on the planet through 23 years of research and development into the personality and never expected to find what we found, which is common people who became stuck, doing uncommon healing and life change by following a simple system that changed everything. This system developed by Pathways Addiction Treatment Programs eventually became the world renowned 10 Pathways of the Paradigm Process of Addiction and Trauma Recovery.” This is the journey people take back to living a life of growth and contribution and everyone is invited.

People who benefit most from the Best Luxury rehab centre alternative in South Africa

  2. People who don’t like big crowds. People who wallow in privacy and spaciousness.
  3. People who want to heal themselves. Who know they have the ability and all they need is the road map. Our Paradigm Process program is that road map.
  4. People who are searching for meaning and purpose rather than addiction psycho-education, of which we offer none. It simply doesn’t work with our clientele.
  5. People who actually really need help with trauma and emotional issues to fix any behaviours they want to change.
  6. People who are more anxious, stressed and depressed than dependent on any substances.

There is a way out of a mental health crisis today and drug rehab centres don’t suit everyone’s needs today. Many people have addictions that in no way are linked to substance abuse, so medical aids need to catch a wake up – fast. They are wasting both their clients money and their own money and as we see Medical aid increases rise to around 12 percent in 2025 we need to start re-thinking the luxury rehab centre holiday vibe, paid for on medical aid that gets people around a 3-10% success rate. So why are medical aids wasting all this time and money? The truth might just be that they don’t see the woods for the trees as yet. Nor can they regulate it as yet, so they err on the side of caution for now.

Luxury Rehab for the Soul

Why did we create the Best Luxury rehab centre alternative in South Africa one could imagine? Well for several reasons. Although our addiction treatment programs are ’50 years ahead of the pack’ because they work on scientific and spiritual principles that combined, have shown to be 100X more powerful for many people than mainstream solutions like rehab or AA. Although people may not like the idea that Deepak Chopra, Tony Robbins, Jordan Peeterson and others have huge success in healing trauma, addictions, depression and the like the statistics speak for themselves. The data they produce is almost identical to the data and reserach we have done over the last two and a half decades into the science behind wellness. You can see some interesting articles from Dr. Joe Dispenza retreats here.

Between 2% and 6% of those admitted to drug rehabilitation centres are hooked on prescription medications. “Most drug rehabilitation centres have a success rate of less than 3%.” (Prof. . Malaka / University of Limpopo).

Alternative addiction treatment

Addiction treatment program for the personality

Mark L Lockwood BA(hons)(psy) has long been helping people successfully heal from addictions, trauma, dual diagnosis and personality disorders alternative addiction treatments that provide some of the best results in the world. Why the results though? It is through the advanced therapy and Paradigm Process programs he has developed to hit cause vs effect? It is because we treat the cause of peoples physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual suffering and we ourselves don’t worry about the effects. We treat the causes not the effects of trauma and emotional pain and that is what makes us get the results we do. How we do that is by hitting the personality and its defence mechanisms with all we have through the Paradigm Process of recovery.

Alternative addiction treatment

People have process addictions for example that have nothing to do with substance abuse treatment. That in its own right is alternative addiction treatment. Anything non 12 step, non-main stream is not quite understood yet, especially in South Africa. But we are getting there slowly. Eventually people are listening to the patients and clients who vow that their issue is something deeper, oftentimes, rooted in trauma. Until now, we have failed to listen closely enough. The human desire for growth and contribution is in each and every one of us. When we do the shadow work, when we make the subconscious, conscious we start to heal. We even start to experience joy and happiness, something that can elude a traumatized person for decades.

“You cannot find your soul with your mind, you must use your heart. You must know what you are feeling. If you don’t know what you are feeling, you will create unconsciously.”
― Gary Zukav

Behavioural problems that involve a lessening of control, persistent seeking, and significant harm even though no addictive substance is involved. A process addiction is characterized by the compulsive nature of the behaviour.

10 Myths about Alternative addiction treatment

  1. Prepare to be criticised if you mention the word alternative to an orthodox main-streamer. 90 Percent of people who have been through treatment believe their way is the only way because that is what they learned works for them. There are many paths to enlightenment and recovery.
  2. People will say acupuncture doesn’t work for treating your addictions. Yet, the numbers rival those of $50 000 a month primary addiction treatment rehabs. Do the research. Not everyone has or wants to, or needs to treat a “substance abuse disorder.” Mental health is much broader than that misconception about people suffering mental health issues for example.
  3. If you have tried main stream rehab and it doesn’t work for you, try something different. Today, there are way too many good options out there with good results, Leave no stone un-turned.
  4. All addicts are the same is a general stance in the medical movement. Uh, no. Yes they have similar personality traits when in active addictions, but we see those fade for those who are serious about recovery and life change in as little as 6-8 weeks.
  5. Shame and Confrontation are Essential to Change is another myth. Shaming someone who doesn’t like conflict can worsen their trauma and need to fight, flight or flee. There are person-centred approaches too, much like we use in our Paradigm Process approach.
  6. People Will Be In Recovery for Life. Not all people, not at all. Bollocks! People go to Joe Dispenza retreats and cure their 20 year drug addiction problems that were symptoms of emotional pain. Our research says the very same thing and we never underestimate the resolve of a determined person who wants to be better than well. The research is in.
  7. Addiction is a brain disease that has no cure. As above, another myth debunked in depth. The dis-ease is often the effect and not the cause.
  8. All addictions are the same. Well, we could go on about this for ever but you have process addictions, addictive personality masks and then some people are physically addicted to cocaine while others are mentally addicted to pornography. Every case is unique and that leaves no space for a one size fits all approach.
  9. Alternative addiction treatment is less effective than main stream drug rehab styled approaches. This myth is becoming harder and harder to hide. When Deepak Chopra, Tony Robbins and Joe Dispenza have scientists recording 10X success rates for depression, addictions, anxiety and trauma then we need to turn around and take a feather.
  10. Alternative addiction treatment should not be viewed as a downfall, an end or a trap. If you find yourself needing treatment embrace the challenge and take massive action! Finding yourself needing addiction treatment or the likes, can often be the catalyst for amazing life change, success and growth. In fact, this is what we find most in our programs. Somehow those who really want change get it – but only every time and we find that if they didn’t have a rock bottom or a dead end, they would never have opened the doorway to there best lives.

10 new alternative addiction treatment avenues

The drug rehab centre band wagon is ill suited to many people today. Yes, it has a very valuable place for substance abuse treatment addicts. Have you ever heard of the village drunk? That was the original scope of treatment which has long since changed. Thankfully we have a drove of some of the best rehab centres in the world in South Africa. Yet, most people with addictions, or symptoms of addictions, obsessions, compulsions, over indulgence etc. will never even consider a drug or alcohol rehab as something they need.

We don’t treat addictions at all today, we treat people! We love them enough to let them open up and love themselves again….our job is easy when you remove the masks of a frightened personality you get to the core issue of egoic defence that imprisons a person to what doesn’t work for them, and what is not kind to them. When we re-connect people to the power of Love, Fear and the accompanying addictions disappear. Fear is False Evidence Appearing Real – it is not real and the truth will set you free.

Mark L Lockwood BA(hons(psy)

For more help with understanding Alternative addiction treatment get in touch. What Mark suggests as an addiction specialist is that “if you are struggling with some kind of addiction or mental, physical or emotional issue – stop it! Do anything else and do it today…..Do something else like attend a drug rehab centre if that’s your thing, speak to your doctor and start therapy with an addiction coach or a personality specialist, psychotherapist or whoever you feel you can connect to. Yes, see a good psychiatrist and try their addiction treatment process, with therapy if possible. Yes, get away from people, places and things and get out of your toxic environment – which is often your home. Do whatever it takes to heal, restore and recover your true nature, a nature that can be masked with an addictive and fearful personality….just don’t wait another minute longer, life and you are simply far to valuable to walk around without a map towards finding your true potential in this world.”

Where did we get addicted to our problems? If you want to make a new choice, if you want to make a decision today, if you want to have a breakthrough in some area of your life – you have to give up your story that it’s not your fault”

– Tony Robbins

What treatment is there for Treatment Resistant Depression?

TMS is an internationally approved treatment for Treatment Resistant Depression, OCD, PSTSD or for depression when there are significant side effects to medications. Treatment resistant depression affects about 30% of people diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a subset of Major Depressive Disorder which does not respond to traditional and first-line therapeutic options. We are finding that the world is changing and so is the way we treat ourselves medically. Rather than letting things get worse and worse, people are reaching out to medical professionals and mental health wellness centres for solutions that offer a complete turnaround from what were once hopeless situations. Our message to people is why wait! It is a terrible strategy that does not work.

TMS is a non-invasive, effective way to stimulate or inhibit the brain to treat many aspects of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, OCD and PTSD.

Getting major depression under control may take several tries with different approaches, such as consulting with experts in mood disorders, adjusting medications, adding therapy or considering other procedures. What we believe is an incredible intervention is an all-out one. Take several months at a mental health wellness centre to change physiological, psychological and emotional components of what you’re dealing with.

Addiction Recovery Rewired

Addiction Recovery Rewired

We have it all backwards and skyrocketing addiction problems are a result. We explore how to treat what lies beneath the mask of the addictive personality is the journey we need to conquer. In this article on Addiction Recovery Rewired we look at Treating the Cause not the Consequences.

What’s happening when we treat addiction today is not working. In fact, it’s getting worse, and we’re starting to understand why, because we’re asking deeper and deeper questions as to why. And if we keep treating the effects, which is addiction, if we keep treating the wound, and keep treating the wound, and keep treating the wound, we’re going to have longer cues at the NHS and our hospitals than we ever have had before. Addiction is getting worse. Epidemically so and our stubborn, closed minded one track solutions that focus on treating a brain disease, treating substance abuse and all things consequence centred rather than cause centred.

We’re treating the effects, we’re treating the masks of personality, and we’re still calling addiction a brain disease still. I mean, come on, no. That is a consequence of some sort of cause that we’ve got to look at. We’ve got to go back and look at the aetiology of each and every person. This is the very nature of psychology, yet we missed it in addiction psychology. No, come on!

Addiction Recovery Rewired through Authenticity

At some point, it becomes too much. The glass overflows, and then we look for ways out. When the pain becomes too extreme, we look for ways out in addictions like drinking, gambling, sex or whatever else we can find to sooth the pain. Addiction Recovery Rewired is all about getting to the rout cause of our issues and leaving the symptoms to cure as a consequence of our work on the root, the pain, the trauma.

The many, many addictions that people have, all those ways out, and they’re ways out of pain and suffering. So you find you go to a psychiatrist today, and you stand in a queue, and when your 15 minutes comes, the doctor is now looking without taking any brain scan, mind you, the only industry in the world that does not look at the actual problem. It’s treating again the symptoms.

And so you will be diagnosed with addiction, with something similar, some depression, anxiety, stress, whatever it is, and you’ll be given a bunch of medication that hopefully is going to treat the wound. And we go back and we go back and we go back. And anyone who knows about addiction treatment today knows that it’s not getting better, it’s getting worse.

So the statistics rarely speak for themselves. There’s no argument here. So when we start treating the trauma, the pain, the origins, under the masks of the addictive personality, we’re going to start finding answers.

Our minds and bodies are one, aligned to a destiny predetermined by our unconscious programs. So to change requires being greater than the body and all its emotional memories, addictions, and unconscious habituations—that is, to no longer be defined by the [trauma] body as the mind. Dr. Joe Dispenza

And that’s what we found. When you have someone with a 20-year addiction, and they really, really want to get well, they’re not zombies, which the public tends to think. You’ve got to put people with an addiction problem, you know, in a centre or a prison, or lock them away some way.

Addiction Recovery Rewired

They’re absolute zombies, and that’s just what they’re acting like. They’re in pain and hurting people, hurt people. So, you’ve got to understand that almost everybody with an addiction problem in general society today that’s reaching out in London, New York, wherever it’s going to be for help, goes into a center and doesn’t really battle the effects of the addiction, the physical effects, the cravings, or anything like that.

Half as much, not even close, as much as what is causing the effect of the problem. When people give themselves a chance to settle down, to work on a plan of getting Addiction Recovery Rewired, it’s remarkable to see how willing and how pliable and how neuroplastic the brain is. People want to learn, and they especially want to learn when something is not working for them, how to make it work.”

The Problem of Pain and Addiction

So we originally develop addiction, which becomes brain disease and all these sorts of clinical things. But behind that, before that, we’ve got to look at the story. In our lives as complicated, emotional human beings, there’s always a story that we’re telling ourselves, that we learned from other people, and so on and so forth, that is driving our thoughts, feelings, perceptions, behaviours, and ultimately consequences.

“Pain is unrelenting. It will get our attention. Despite our attempts to drown it in addiction, to physically beat it out of one another, to suffocate it with success and material trappings, or to strangle it with our hate, pain will find a way to make itself known.”
– Brene Brown

When we keep going to doctors and trying to soothe our pain, we become addicted again. We’ve become cross-addicted. And as that pain wears off, you’re reaching out externally for something else to ease that pain.

We’ve got to get to the origins of the problem. All addictions really do at the end of the day is try and relieve suffering. Of course, this root of self-medication doesn’t work and tends to make things far, far worse for each person.

But the addiction, the drinking, the distraction, the avoidance, all of it serves a basic need to get some sort of relief and some sort of reprieve, not just pleasure instead of pain, but a way out of torment and tyranny. When we get underneath the addictive personality’s mask, personality meaning. Addiction Recovery Rewired puts the cart before the horse once more – perspective is everything because where our focus goes and energy flows.

“And under that is where we need to go and search and get into those painful emotions and thoughts and feelings and perceptions that we once could not treat ourselves when we were 12, when that mask developed. And understand today that if we’re still people-pleasing, it’s going to lead to more and more pain, because what we need is two things really. We need genuine connection.

Addiction Recovery Rewired

We can’t fake it. We need absolute genuine connection. We can’t keep scrambling and taking the little bits and pieces of fractured connections. We need genuine connection. And secondly, we need personal authenticity. We cannot fake it.

Everything based in fear, and of course, fear breeds lies and confusion and all sorts of things like that. When we’re not authentic to ourselves, we lose the ability to love ourselves. So what we call that in the paradigm process is when we start to come back out of these addictive loops, however long they’ve been going on for, is we need to let go of a sense of control.

The mind thinks that people pleasing, for example, is a way of controlling, not getting to the deeper emotions that it thinks are too painful. But the mind is lying. It is not telling you the truth. It is trying to lie and cover up pain – in doing so we lose our authenticity and start to suffer even more.

And then there’s no need for an addiction, for a distraction, for something that, you know, hurting people hurt people. We don’t need to now hurt ourselves, to dwell and float in the pain and misery of inauthenticity, of disconnection, of rejection. And this is how we heal.

Addiction recovery Rewired

So what solution do I think we have as far as Addiction Recovery Rewired from top to bottom? We have the Paradigm Process of Addiction Recovery and it is available to everyone. We’ve got ten steps, ten pathways, ten mosques to take off. And when we do, we recover, and we’re new in very short periods of time, because we’re treating the cause and not the effect.

Remember that everyone’s needs are different. For example, not everybody requires medically supervised detox or an extended stint in rehab. Whether you have a problem with illegal or prescription drugs, addiction treatment should be customized to your unique situation. Holistic addiction treatment programs help far, far, far more people with better results more often.

“The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. The opposite of addiction is connection.” — Johann Hari

A drug rehab centre or alcohol rehab centre has its place and 21 day stints in drug rehabs are a great place to start for many people. However many people have tried alcohol rehab several times with no success and the majority of people will never even consider, or go to a alcohol rehab even though they want to cut down on drinking or get healthier, or lose weight or get the discipline levels up for their career and relationship goals. Some people hate crowds and dislike authority figures and red tape. That is why the single person or one at a time drug rehab centre scene is exploding. Also, gone are the days of having to be labelled an addict or alcoholic. Labels which kept the majority of people with some sort of addictions, or bad habits or process addictions living in quiet desperation, alone and afraid of being told they were someone they didn’t feel they were. Not a minute too soon.

What are holistic addiction treatment programs?

Holistic addiction treatment programs are changing the landscape of how people view themselves, their flaws and the issues they need to work on. Holistic refers to a “whole person” approach to health care interventions like alcohol treatment. Holistic treatment is the simultaneous focus on the body, heart and mind together for complete long lasting, no BS recovery. American Addiction Centres say that “A continuing trend in healthcare for the past few decades has been incorporating complementary, alternative, or holistic treatment approaches into more standard therapies. Substance misuse and addiction treatment is no exception to this”. So the main stream is slowly getting behind the trend of holistic addiction treatment programs.

It is after all about finding better ways to help people recover from addictions and trauma right? The backlash for anything holistic has been adamant and strong from many institutions and organisations who love the big bucks, power, and titles they have earned from super expensive drug rehab empires. If you mention the words ‘alternative to rehab’ they pounce on you. Thankfully though this power dynamic is changing and the likes of Gabor Mate and others like Mel Robbins, That Sober Guy Podcast and dozens more are changing the landscape of holistic addiction treatment programs.

Whenever you are inauthentic fear is the cause and pain is the result which is why we treat addiction like trauma. We don’t care about substances or anything else external when treating people, we simply shift them from love to fear – Mark L Lockwood BA(psy)(hons)

The big 5 rules of Holistic addiction treatment programs are:

  • EVERYONE’S INVITED – You and everyone else can use many Integrating Diverse Therapies that suit you. Everyone is different so seek out what is right for you and ask for help from experts whenever you can.
  • EVERYONE QUALIFIES – If you don’t feel you’re an addict or alcoholic but you feel stuck, you qualify for Holistic addiction treatment programs. The mainstream may not accept you but the new breed of therapists, professionals and addiction psychology experts certainly will. They will support you too!
  • NO QUICK FIXES – Know that there are no quick fixes. You need a full program of change most of the time. Yes, people do heal addictions on a 3 day yoga retreat or at a Joe Dispenza retreat. The research is in. But these interventions should be supported by a therapy process or system you can follow for 6-8 weeks. You can do that with many of our Pathways rehab for the soul products.
  • PERSEVERANCE – Keep on keeping on. Try and try again and never quit.
  • KEEP AN OPEN MIND – The mainstream drug rehab centre approach and the philosophies of AA and NA have worked wonders so millions of people. Try them out if you like and keep an open mind to all modalities, interventions and ideas.

Remember that no treatment works for everyone. Everyone’s needs are different. Whether you have a problem with illegal or prescription drugs, addiction treatment should be customized to your unique situation. It’s important that you find a program that feels right.

Treatment should address more than just your drug abuse. Addiction affects your whole life, including your relationships, career, health, and psychological well-being. Treatment success depends on developing a new way of living and addressing the reasons why you turned to drugs in the first place.

Luxury rehab centres south africa

Addiction is not what you may think and not everyone with emotional, metal health, addictive behaviours or overindulgence periods for example will benefit from a 21 day medical aid drug rehab, being labelled an alcoholic, addict or ‘bad person’ of any kind. But our message is that if our lives are not working for us we must make the changes – on our own terms in our own way. Gabor Mate, says substances like alcohol and heroin or sex and power have very little to do with addictions and we agree wholeheartedly.

Non clinical, non-rehab, non-substance abuse treatment, no labels, no nonsense just highly advanced self development work through thorough personality development programs, from experienced professionals with international acclaim are an alternative answer. Just Rehab for the mind, body and soul.

Today instead of work on substance abuse as a symptom of deeper emotional issues which we find is pretty useless at this advanced level of healing for our clients, we focus and work on the personality, the emotional masks and the emerging person within that desperately needs to evolve from their stuckness. 13 years of research and evidence we have accumulated are now reaping unique results in our holistic field that are taking names worldwide! For more than a decade, our team has conducted thousands of hours of original research on recovery, treatment and transformation – observing normal people doing non-normative things, and measuring the results, and analysing the data it demonstrates there is a clear formula for creating lasting changes in the body, heart and mind through the masks of the personality.

10 tips for starting your own Holistic addiction treatment programs

  1. Dont go it alone. Reach out to doctors, addiction counsellors who offer assessments and even people in organisations such as Alcoholics anonymous. Although their programs may not be for you they will point you in the right direction.
  2. Know that you don’t have to take on any labels or be called any names if you want to get healthier, mentally, physically and emotionally stronger. A person who is interested in self development of any kind has our full respect.
  3. Keep an open mind. Today in terms of Holistic addiction treatment programs there are yoga retreats, mens events, sober groups and societies and more main stream groups. Check them all out and remember that all that really counts is your progress, self knowledge and perseverance.
  4. Find new healthier ways of dealing with stress, overwhelm and other personal issues. There are both good and bad ways to relieve stress.
  5. Quick fixes like Ayahuasca and ketamine get a bad wrap from the mainstream but many have had some positive experiences with these treatments. We suggest viewing them as part of a holistic addiction treatment program process, not the whole process. Counselling is essential too.
  6. Get new routines in place. Work some kind of program, like our paradigm process addiction treatment program or something else. You will need structure and support so seek it out and follow a program or you will likely fall back into old crappy habits fast.
  7. Helplines. Use them, especially at first. In the UK they have NHS drug addictions support services or call the Frank helpline at 0800 776600. Check listings in your own area and be prepared.
  8. Dont think that Tony Robbins, Mark L Lockwood or Deepak Chopra alternative addiction styled programs cant help you and that you must attend a 50 thousand pound luxury drug rehab for 6 months. The experts today agree there are no hard and fast rules, so don’t rule anything out. Work what you think is best for you.
  9. Pills won’t be enough. See a good addiction psychiatrist but know that the research suggests it ain’t gonna be near enough support to get you into a long term abstinent or controlled drinking lifestyle. Again, you need an addiction recovery coach or some sort or Holistic addiction treatment programs input to change the way you think, then feel, then do life.
  10. Never give up. Most people, in fact 80-95% of folks go to a alcohol rehab and fail a few times. That is the science of addiction treatment. Fins what works for you and then work that hard, often and relentlessly. Life is invaluable, much like you are so keep on keeping on till you taste success.

In conclusion we all need to keep a balanced view of the massively changed, never to be the same alcohol and drug rehab answer to healing and recovering lives. American addiction centres remind us that “most experts agree that conventional, research-based detox and treatment for addiction, provided through a residential program, is more likely to support an individual in maintaining recovery. The holistic label may indicate a wide range of complementary or alternative treatment offerings”.

Exclusive Luxury rehab Centre

So hit the drug rehab centre scene if you can and start there . If you won’t ever go to such a place, or simply the whole centre scene is not your thing then seek out an alternative when it is suitable to do so. Holistic process addiction treatment programs like the Paradigm Process of Addiction recovery are super modern and ultra powerful ways to help more people more often because of the diversity, scope, freedom and individualised landscape of working from home, work, university or in-person or online are all accommodated. Our message is choose what works for you and start. Don’t stay stuck.

Addicted to Ego and Self Will

Addiction treatment program for the personality

Addiction treatment program for the personality

Learn more about our Addiction treatment program for the personality which offers 10 crucial steps targeting your personality for recovery. To create a Paradigm Shift from the old addicted self to a new recovered self requires us to become conscious of all our unconscious thoughts, perceptions, feelings, automatic actions, traits, routines, and emotional reactions that we’ve been conditioned into over the years through creating our own unique personality through the the architecture of your brains conditioning. If the old personality is addicted, you will have to change everything and create a new one. To become conscious of any of these subconscious programs is the first initiation to change.

If the old personality is addicted, you will have to change everything and create a new one.

Mark L Lockwood – founder paradigm addiction treatment process

It is the analytical mind that is addicted. Not you. Addiction is a brain dis-ease and it is a disease of stuckness, familiarity and conditioned responses that we use addictively that no longer serve us. In fact they do the opposite and keep getting us the same frustrating results over and over again. Research suggests that up to 90% or more of our daily activities are all based on habit and addictive cycles. Then, if we have behavioural addictions and problems with expressing our emotions and being our true selves this can all add fuel to the fire of personality which is like melting the persona, meaning mask, onto your face almost permanently. Our codependence and victim positions as well as all our complaining, worrying, judging, blaming can become who we think and feel we are. So when it comes time to change and this person or mask is who we think we have become we need to get ready for a hangover. Change and transformation start with feeling uncomfortable.

Our habits become our addictions in many ways, although there is a lot of argument around these things. Nevertheless we know that nerve cells that wire together fire together and it becomes easier to repeat behaviors so often that they literally become who we think, feel and act we are.

The good news when it comes to losing our addictive personality and creating a new one is that the brain is highly open to neuroplasticity and change. The bad news is that people with addictive personalities tend to have very little neuroplasticity at all when they start a healing and recovery journey. When they become aware of how stuck or addicted the brain is then we have become the first step of change which is letting go of a false sense of control. We will start to see that we are addicted to the problems and conditions of our lives that produce stress, anger and stuckness. No matter whether we’re in a bad relationship or have a career we don’t even like, we hold onto our problems so tightly because we falsely believe with the addicted brain that we are the problem because they help reinforce who we think and feel we are. To change this we need to show up, own up and grow up. We need to realise that we are not our conditions, thoughts, feelings and emotions. We need to realise we are running a subconscious program that keeps us addicted to thinking a certain way.

Finally an Addiction treatment program for the personality

Paradigm Process of Healing your Personality teaches you how to become aware of the masks of persona who have adopted since childhood and how to replace them with healthy aspects of your highest, most sacred self. All is well with my soul, which I can only access once I realise it has a hard outer shell surrounding it called a mask of personality.

When the personality is no longer serving you but hindering you then you need a new program. When a computer program becomes redundant we need to get rid of it and replace it with a new one. It is the same with the programs we run in our bodies hearts and minds. Because the world is changing so quickly we need to keep up. There is no room left to operate from money mind without inevitably falling from the tree. If we fall behind we fall into survival or victim modes that naturally keep us suppressed and distressed. At some point we know we need to run a new program however it is easier said than done in understanding where to find that program and how to install it. The 10 step program to heal your life is that program – the Paradigm Process.

The Paradigm Process Addiction treatment program for the personality offers people 10 Pathways out of addictions and back to sacred self that are workable, profound and easy to follow. Your sacred self is where your true values, emotions, desires and objectives reside. It is that part of you that is wanting more from life. It is that part of you that wants to actualise your full potential and grow personally and then heal the world. There are certain things that we learned in childhood that became our ego defence mechanisms. We developed what we call ego insurgents to protect us from a harsh and ever-changing world. We developed a controller insurgent. We also developed a judge a victim and a perfectionist insurgent. In fact we developed 10 ego insurgents that kept us safe from the world by creating a personality that became a personal reality for us all.

To learn more about our Addiction treatment program for the personality, our events, luxury rehab retreats, residential rehab and treatment packages online and in person get in touch. The most modern way out of addiction has arrived and is based in the science of psychiatry, dipped in the principles of personality development and disorders and moves us on a journey towards the authentic, recovered self that no longer needs to be shrouded in its addictive masks.

When it comes to rehab alternatives or Alternative Treatment for Drug Addiction in any form the mainstream get 12 step panicky; which is not necessary. What we need are more powerful tools that apply more deeply to a new generation of people who are looking for faster results that suit their mindsets. We don’t have to through out the old to add the new. That would be foolish. Anything that helps people get better results in their addiction recovery process is a good thing – and it looks like we’ve found that, tested that and tried that and the results far outweigh anything we expected to find. Addicted people are doing extraordinary in recovery today. They are more determined and focused than ever to get to where they want to go and that helps a lot. Most people we deal with are tired of rock bottoms, dead ends and losing battles!

Through meditation practice that we teach at our luxury rehab centre retreats, through contemplation practice, through developing a new understanding of how you body-heart-mind works, through changing thoughts, belief, energetics and focus you can begin to have a full paradigm shift. Tackling each mask and removing it layer by layer and then replacing those masks with the highest energies, concepts, attitudes, traits and beliefs is the way through the 10 Pathways. Our message is don’t stay stuck and don’t wait. The work is waiting for us all. All we need to do is show up for ourselves.

Addicted to Ego and Self Will

Addicted to Ego and Self Will

Without surrender you will not fix your unmanageable emotions and thoughts that create unhealthy outcomes for you time after time. Most people have an addictive personality or mask which has certain outstanding traits that can be easily spotted, especially by addiction recovery professionals. Experience lets them know if you’re Addicted to Ego and Self Will. The important thing however is for you to know if you’re Addicted to Ego and Self Will and this blog will help you with that. Read carefully and slowly and remember the mind’s defence mechanisms will often not let you see, comprehend or listen to the truth. It must be done purposefully and over time with the solid intention of healing and recovery or it just ain’t gonna work. Ego is a funny thing and you may find our 15 solutions for Addicted to Ego and Self Will Recovery very poignant.

Obsessed With Control

Let’s jump right into the work that we have researched with hundreds of people through our recovery retreats, events and luxury addiction rehabilitation programs. Why does everything I do always end up in a riot? Is it a problem with self will and ego. Probably. The main player with a self-will run riot is the very notion of “the self”. Thinking you know what’s best for you, thinking you can change external circumstance and control all aspects of your life- these are dangerous thinking patterns that run the riot of your life. Doing what doesn’t work over and over again is addiction and expecting a positive outcome from what doesn’t work is the insanity AA refers to.

We also need to become consciously aware that selfishness is at the root of our troubles. “Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking, and self-pity, egoic-insanity, we step on the toes of our family and everyone really, and they retaliate. Sometimes they hurt us, seemingly without provocation, but we invariably find out if we look hard enough that at some time in the past, we have made decisions based on self which later placed us in a position to be hurt” AA Big Book. You may need to read that again.

Individuals do everything in their power to manipulate the situation to fit their own desires. Maybe feelings aren’t mutual in a romantic relationship, and you try to find a way to make them reciprocated. The self-will run riot is born out of selfishness, and obsession ensues quickly as an attempt to create a structure that in reality doesn’t exist. MY life, MY will, MY future, MY way” are the underlying thinking patterns.

You cannot use the problem to solve the problem. Just like a sick mind cannot heal a sick mind. This is when surrendering to something other than ourselves, and trusting in another with our lives becomes a choice.

Unmask the pain for addiction recovery

Self will run riot sufferers are hesitant to listen or acknowledge their obsession with control, but often it becomes an experience of enlightenment. You get yourself into situations of riot, chaos, argument and crisis on your own. It is not other people – it is your self will.  When we selfishly try to assert our will over others instead of accepting things, we create a sense of inner conflict that continues to drive us deeper and deeper into addiction, isolation and worst of all the same crappy behaviours that hurt ourselves and others.

Self will run riot sufferers often don’t like the Big Book or AA or eventually any other program. They like the sound of their own voice. Self will run riot sufferers often don’t think they need a Higher Power. Self will run riot sufferers are often anti everything, anti-God, anti-program, anti-psychologists and often anti-everything except finally surrendering their ego ideas of control and getting well. So that is the tall and short of being addicted to Ego and Self Will. Now let us seek some solutions together compiled by Mark L Lockwood for some of the best ways we can possibly manage self will running riot.

15 solutions for Addicted to Ego and Self Will Recovery

  1. AWARENESS – Realising that your extreme behavior causes even more problems in your life is a great start. Start to learn impulse control, humility, learn to listen and ask for help, become aware of your see-will mentality, follow a program like the 12 steps or Paradigm Process 10 steps and not your subconscious program, immediately find your Higher Power. You’re fired as of now as your own higher power! Once you recognize the behavior, you’re able to swallow your pride. Self will run riot sufferers try to control the people and world around us and when our efforts fail, we become resentful, angry, hurt, or disappointed.
  2. DROP THE PERSONA – Get beyond your personality and back to spirituality. People shudder at the idea of surrendering to something greater than themselves-thinking they will lose their identities, their lives, and their desires.  But what actually happens is something pretty amazing-you find freedom. Freedom from yourself, freedom from constantly trying to create a life that doesn’t really exist, and freedom from tension with yourself and those around you.
  3. DO (ACTION) RECOVERY – Until you follow and DO a program of surrender nothing is going to change – nothing has as yet if you’re a sufferer. You need to start on Step 1 and follow the AA program or similar, attend 3 meetings a week or so and continue counselling and therapy for you to start healing your self will issue. The following assignment work is designed to guide you to do The 10 Paradigm Process steps and or AA’s 12 steps and find your Higher Power. No recovery can begin until you actually admit your life is unmanageable because you are powerless to control your emotions; emotions that run riot.
  4. IT STARTS WITH YOU – “Your troubles, we think, are basically of our own making. They arise out of ourselves, and the alcoholic is an extreme example of self-will run riot, though he usually doesn’t think so. Above everything, we alcoholics must be rid of this selfishness. We must, or it kills us!”AA Big Book.
  5. ASK – Learn to ask for help.
  6. LET GO – When you don’t realize how hard you’re trying to control things, it can be challenging to understand why everything is going wrong. Maybe you’re fighting with people a lot and getting into arguments, and you can’t see why the world isn’t on the same page as you. When you let go of control, you realize you were only seeing things from your point of view. When you let go of “the self” you give up pressures that add stress to your life.
  7. SEEK THE TRUTH – Others couldn’t give you what you wanted because what you wanted isn’t a reality- just a manifestation of your internal obsessions. There is an excitement bound with freedom that you will feel when you can learn to let go. Reality is truth and it has nothing to do with addiction, relapse, ego, self will, selfishness and the like. Reality is what is real.
  8. STOP BEING SELFISH – If selfishness is the root of our problems, and it is, the antidote is selflessness. When our sponsors point out that we are acting in self-will or when we recognize that our self-will has run riot, we can turn to Step Three again and again.
  9. BECOME REBORN TO YOUR HIGHER SELF– Established on Pathway of the Paradigm process we let go of control and rekindle self love. “We become less and less interested in ourselves, our little plans and designs. More and more we became interested in seeing what we could contribute to life. As we felt new power flow in, as we enjoyed peace of mind, as we discovered we could face life successfully, as we became conscious of His presence, we began to lose our fear of today, tomorrow or the hereafter. We were reborn.”
  10. PRAY – When we find our traits of being Addicted to Ego and Self Will taking over, the Third Step Prayer can help. and it goes like this. If you don’t like the steps find an alternative but at the end of the day you will just find words that hurt your ego less. Mark suggests that if it is true over here then it must be true over there and the ruth sets us free from ego. Pray like this. “God, I offer myself to Thee To build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will.  Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy love & Thy way of life. May I do Thy will always.” If prayer is unpopular and you’re addicted; do the unpopular.
  11. RECOGNISE THE PATTERNS We can look for patterns of behaviour. Trying to control is an instinctive reaction. Because it is instinctive, it happens again and again. Becoming aware of our predictable, knee-jerk reactions to certain types of situations will lead us to recognise our preferred means of control- and our intended result.
  12. TRUST THYSELFWe decide to trust our own feelings and perceptions. Low self-esteem often keeps us from believing that what we feel is okay or that what we perceive is accurate. We feel apologetic about being the way we are, and we try to be the way we think we should be. We can’t identify how we feel because we haven’t given ourselves permission to feel anything. When we decide to believe in ourselves, to trust, ourselves, our self-esteem rises. We may not choose to share our feelings or to act on them, but we must learn to identify them and trust them.
  13. FIND ANOTHER WAYWe identify alternatives. What is happening right now? If nothing changes, what real choices do we have? What are the probable consequences of each choice? Communicating indirectly, trying to get others to change, or waiting until things are different are choices. We must learn to see that we have other alternatives. This may be very difficult. We often need help in identifying alternatives, because our habitual way of handling things seems the only way to us.
  14. BE OBJECTIVE – Sometimes it helps to recast the situation as a problem to be solved. Try to be objective. Who is involved? What are the issues to be resolved? What does each side want? Is it possible to try and negotiate or compromise? By letting go of an instinctive solution, we can concentrate on the problem- with unexpectedly satisfying and rewarding results. Don’t trust your ego!
  15. DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONSCheck your assumptions. Our low self-esteem causes us to imagine the worst and then act as though it were true. So often we find that our worst fears are not true, especially where other people’s estimation of us is concerned. We need to ask more about what others really think and feel. Curiously, knowing the truth- even if it’s awful- often relieves tension and clears the air. We can stop being afraid of what might be and deal with what is. When we act on assumptions, we allow ourselves to be ruled by fear.

We need to decide what we really need and start looking for it. This is the hardest part, because then we must admit we have needs, This means letting go of our images of being perfect, aloof, self-sufficient, and always in control. As long as we persist in denying our needs and arranging things so we will feel secure, we will not know what we really need. Healing calm, joy and peace are waiting for you. All you need to do is commit to the work of letting go of Your Self Will run Riot and be reborn to your Sacred Self rather than your disordered persona.

A Mission Statement for Parents and Families of Adult Children and Problem Adults

A solution for Adult Children

The Solution for Parents and Families of Adult and Problem Children is to let go (with love) of the chains of your expectations. When someone is around 18 years old in this world, much younger in years gone by, they are an adult. We need this guideline. Nature is shouting it at us from the mountain tops. If you are an adult child and you are twenty or thirty or so then even you need to grow up, own up and show up for yourself and become an adult and not a problem adult. The adult child syndrome is not good for you and won’t get you very far in the long term. It is a short term solution that the psychology of science shows us simply does not work. Behind every adult child is an enabler. It is a family system after all. First we need to become aware of what we’re all doing, where we’re all going, and then we need to follow a new program or system of recovery that works. A system that grows us, our self esteem and all the dimensions of wellness we need to fulfil to thrive in life.

Adults don’t need other adults doing for them what they can do for themselves. Yet, so many adults, parents and family members allow their hurts and fears and their own need to control and relive the past and predestine the future instead to help create adult children and problem adults. When we ‘love’ someone we will indeed need to be willing to set them free. Whether it is your child or not – no one who is an adult is yours, and neither do they belong to you. You do not fundamentally owe them anything and they do not owe you anything. We don’t raise children, we raise cattle. We guide children to guide themselves. This is love and love is a verb.

The Solution

Valuable lessons learned from the ACA a World Service organization said that there is a ‘solution’ and they describe the solution as follows. We will do well to grasp what solution they found. They put it like this…

From today we can teach Adult Children and Problem Adults to express all their hurts and fears you have kept inside and to free yourself from the shame and blame that are carry-overs from the past.

You will become an adult who is imprisoned no longer by childhood reactions. You will recover the child within you and grow up, own up and show up for yourself as an adult, learning to accept and love yourself.

The healing begins when we risk moving out of isolation. Feelings and buried memories will return. By gradually releasing the burden of unexpressed grief, we slowly move out of the past. We learn to look after ourselves with gentleness, humour, love, and respect. This process allows us to see our biological parents as the instruments of our existence. Our actual parent is a Higher Power whom some of us choose to call God.

Although our parents were definitely not perfect we start to share our experience, strength, and hope with other healthy and balanced adults in a healthy environment. We learn to restructure our sick thinking one day at a time.

When we release our parents from responsibility for our actions today, we become free to make healthier decisions as actors, not reactors. We progress from hurting, to healing, to helping. We awaken to a sense of wholeness we never knew was possible and come to understand that family dysfunction is passed endlessly from generation to generation and accept it for  what it is: a trauma that infected you as a child and continues to affect you as an adult. You will learn to keep the focus on yourself in the here and now.

As you learn from A Mission Statement for Parents and Families of Adult Children and Problem Adults like this you will take responsibility for your own life and supply your own parenting of the self. This is authentic self love. You will not do this alone. Look around you and you will see others who know how you feel and accept you just as you accept them. This is a spiritual solution based on action coming from love. We are sure that as the love grows inside you, you will see beautiful changes in all your relationships, especially with God, yourself, and your parents. Because when you change the way you look at things the things you look at change.

Parents and Families of Adult and Problem Children Mission Statement

If you want to create a solution for clients, friends or your own family then a mission statement matters. We put it this way. We are parents, we are family and we are loved ones that are intimately related to you in this difficult and wonderful life and this is my wholehearted mission statement to you. The following wholehearted parenting manifesto is a bond between you and I. Whenever we get confused, defensive or unmanageable emotions arise we can turn to this mission statement wholeheartedly. This mission statement has helped me establish the terms of our relationship as I see it which are three fold. Beauty, truth and goodness. Our present relationship is based in the present moment on beauty, truth and goodness regardless of any other thoughts, feeling, perceptions, behaviours and consequences.

“Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you”.

— Kahlil Gibran

Together we will use this mission statement designed by Mark L Lockwood and his clinical team and used at the Center for Healing & Life Transformation as an affirmation of love and as a meditation of wisdom we can use especially when we doubt ourselves into fear-responses. Perfect love eradicates that fear-response and that is what we are all growing into one day at a time. Fearless lovers of what is! A Mission Statement for Parents and Families of Adult Children and Problem Adults can, will and does heal and transform lives profoundly. So here is A Mission Statement for Parents and Families of Adult Children and Problem Adults.

A Mission Statement for Parents and Families of Adult Children and Problem Adults

I WILL RESPECT MY OWN HEALTHY BOUNDARIES FIRST, AND THEN YOUR HEALTHY BOUNDARIES. IF THEY ARE NOT HEALTHY I DON’T RESPECT THEM.

I want you to feel uncertainty and learn how to bear it.

I OWE YOU ONLY THE LOVE I HAVE FOR MYSELF. I HAVE NO MORE TO GIVE, BECAUSE I CAN ONLY GIVE YOU THE LOVE I HAVE FOR MYSELF. WHETHER YOU ACCEPT OR REJECT MY LOVE IS ONLY YOUR BUSINESS. IT IS NONE OF MY BUSINESS ANYMORE, AS I HAVE BEEN TAUGHT BY LIFE TO STAY IN MY OWN BUSINESS.

I want you to feel your feelings and I want me to recognise that when I try and do your feelings for you we are heading towards relapse and not recovery and problems and not solutions.

I HAVE LEARNED THAT THE PARENT CHILD RELATIONSHIP ENDS AT AROUND 18 FOR A REASON. THE 1 (in 18) STANDS FOR YOU AND THE 8 REPRESENTS INFINITY. 18 IS A METAPHOR FOR ONE INFINITY. WHEN I INTERFERE IN YOUR INFINITY, DOING WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF, YOU SUFFER. AS AN ADULT I WILL NO LONGER DO FOR YOU WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF. IT DISABLES YOU THROUGH ENABLING YOU AND TODAY I AM A SOLUTION, NOT A PROBLEM.

I want you to practice self-compassion, no longer will I naively try and do it for you.

I WANT US TO KEEP LEARNING HOW TO BE ACCOUNTABLE AND TO OWN UP, SHOW UP AND GROW UP FOR OURSELVES.

I want you to know about life and death and I want you to learn how to choose life, KNOWING that whatever you choose is your choice and not my choice. I want you to be who you think you should be and not who I think you should be. That game is over as you take wholehearted accountability for your OWN life; as I do the very same thing.

I WILL TEACH YOU AUTONOMY. WHEN MONEY, FAVOURS & MATERIAL THINGS ARE EXPECTED OF ME I PUT UP A FIRM BOUNDARY AND REMAIN PART OF THE SOLUTION.

I want you to know that I see you, believe in you and am willing to watch you learn from your mistakes, from your impulsiveness, your selfishness and your ego so that you will grow.

I WILL PRACTICE ONLY BEING PART OF THE SOLUTION AND NOT THE PROBLEM. LET US ALL LEARN FROM THE RECORD OF THE PAST AND NOT FOOLISHLY REPEAT IT.

I want you to learn from your own mistakes and I will learn from my own mistakes.

I AM NO LONGER AN ADDICT. ADDICTION IS DOING THE SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER AGAIN THAT DOESN’T WORK. TODAY WE ARE ALL IN RECOVERY FROM FEAR. NOW LOVE REIGNS SUPREME. TODAY I AM IN LOVE.

I want you to know that resentment and blaming are yours to let go of. As of now I live only in the present moment, with lessons and not failures.

I WILL TEACH YOU COMPASSION BY FIRST PRACTISING COMPASSION WITH MYSELF.

I want you to know your hearts longing and feel the aching of that longing as you rise from the ashes like a phoenix learning how to choose beauty over the ashes and the ugly.

I WANT US TO LEARN TO HAVE FUN & TRUST THE PROCESS OF LIFE RATHER THAN CONTROL IT

I want you to know how to always be yourself around me and know that I will do the same

I WILL TEACH YOU THROUGH WHAT I DO AND NOT WHAT I SAY. I WILL NO LONGER TEACH YOU THROUGH MAKING OR ALLOWING YOU DEPENDENT ON ME.

I want you to know how to stay out of the drama, the distractions and the confusion. No longer will we play the gaslighting game. A game that says “but you said, you owe me and it’s your fault

A Mission Statement for Parents and Families of Adult Children and Problem Adults

I WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO STICK TO YOUR HEALTHY BOUNDARIES THROUGH THE WAY I STICK TO MINE.

I want you to understand that when you try and punish, resent, and blame me for my failures or mistakes that it is work you need to do on yourself and not work I can do for you. By reading my Mission Statement I will remember always that I have now forgiven myself for my past and am looking with faith, hope and love to the future.

I HAVE LEARNED TO ANSWER SLOWLY AND GIVE NO GUARANTEES.

I want you to learn that victim mentality is a trap. Victims become violent, volatile and vengeful people. Today I choose vulnerability and radical acceptance over the victim roles I once played.

I HAVE LEARNED YOUR CRISIS IS NOT MY CRISIS AND SELDOM IS THEIR EVER A CRISIS  THAT WE DID NOT MAKE HAPPEN. THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTS IN GOD’S WORLD.

I want you to know that I acknowledge your perspective. They are your perspectives to learn from and not mine to judge. From today I am grateful enough to let you learn, live, laugh and love the way you want to do it. It is not ‘our’ life. It is your life as an adult individual and yours alone. I want you and me to let life have you. IN this way we will become unlimited.

I HAVE TAUGHT MYSELF TO STAND FIRM AND STILL BE OPEN AND VULNERABLE

I want you to know that withholding, punishing, blaming, playing the victim card and shifting responsibility onto me no longer works as a solution, but only a problem based in fear, and I will no longer do what does not work! I will always try and trust the truth and do the next best thing I can think of for myself. These things that you can now watch me do and learn from; whether successes or failures they are all a gracious gift for which I am truly thankful.

I HAVE LEARNED TO BE AUTHENTIC AND HONEST AND NOT TO LIE, MINIMISE, DENY OR HIDE ANYTHING FROM ANYONE, INCLUDING THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT YOU SEE, DO OR SAY. IT IS WHAT IT IS AND IT IS THE TRUTH THAT WILL SET US FREE.

I want you to learn perseverance and hard work as you move from struggle to strength and from fear to love. Learn, live and grow through your life staying open in order to courageously connect with life on life’s terms. I’ve learned that Life, and you and me, are beautiful and when we start to take action from a place of love – and love is a verb – miracles happen. It is through this self-loving action that I will teach myself how to show you how to find the same love for yourself in your own time and in your own way. We will both learn that love leads the way and love wins, but only every time!

I HAVE LEARNED HOW TO LOVE AND LET GO, WILL YOU ?

Whether you do or not is your choice. I want you to make all your decisions for yourself and bear the consequences for yourself. This is the one plus one arithmetic of life and it never gets the answers wrong. I want you to trust or not trust,  to believe or not believe, to respect or resent yourself and others. How you treat life is how you treat yourself, God and other people. This is the science of finding your spiritual self and find it YOU will.

Addiction Treatment requires beginners mind

Addiction Treatment requires a beginner’s mind because the very nature of addiction is self-centeredness, pride, an aversion to change, a victim mentality, and an unwillingness to ask for or follow help. Those who have expert knowledge about any topic are usually well respected for this. Such people have devoted their expertise to learning about their chosen field. This means that their opinions on these topics should be respected. There is a dark side to expert knowledge. It can cause people to become a bit closed-minded and unwilling to consider other alternatives to their opinions and conclusions. There is also a tendency for humans to behave as if they were experts on a topic even though their knowledge is limited in that area. Beginner’s mind is recommended as the ideal approach to learn – it means that even those who have learned a great deal about a topic can continue their learning. If experts do not maintain a beginner’s mind, it can cause them to become stuck.

Beginner’s Mind and Sobriety: The Dangers of Expert Knowledge

In Zen Buddhism they refer to Beginner’s mind as Shoshin. It refers to a situation where people are open and eager to learn new things and do not have too many preconceptions about what they are about to study. It means putting aside preconceived ideas for a short time so as to consider new information. If people have already made up their mind about something it will be highly unlikely that they will learn anything new. It is not necessary to be a Buddhist or learn about Zen in order to develop Shoshin.

Beginner’s Mind and the Empty Cup Story

There is a famous Zen story of a university professor who went to visit a renowned meditation master that explains why Addiction Treatment requires a beginner’s mind so well. This professor had been studying Zen and he wanted to gain more knowledge from the monk. The academic launched into a speech about all that he had learned about Buddhism. While he was doing this, the monk started to pour tea for his guest. The liquid reached the top of the cup, yet the monk kept on pouring tea into the utensil as it overflowed. The professor felt alarmed and asked why this esteemed master was continuing to pour after the cup was full. The monk responded by saying, you are like this cup. He went on to explain that he could not teach the professor anything about Zen because his brain was already full of ideas about Zen. He did not have a beginner’s mind. Addiction Treatment requires a beginner’s mind and a total paradigm shift away from self-centeredness, false pride, and a typical egoic attitude. When this happens, it is almost certain that the addict will have to completely sell his false pride for humility or fail miserably.

Addiction Treatment requires beginners mind. The Benefits.

Beginner’s mind is the best attitude for people who want to learn anything. The benefits of this type of attitude include:

* If people already have many rigid opinions and beliefs about something it can make it difficult to gain any new knowledge.
* The Zen monk Shunryu Suzuki once said that, in the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few. Those who have a more open attitude will be able to think outside of the box and come up with solutions to problems that the expert would never consider.
* Those people who have this type of attitude are far more willing to make mistakes and learn from them. The expert can live in fear of making mistakes so this prevents their knowledge from progressing any further.
* Beginner’s mind keeps people humble and helps them avoid arrogance. This means that they are usually nice people to be around and have no problems making friends.
* This type of attitude can help people avoid dogmatism and zealotry.
* When people keep a beginner’s mind it prevents them from becoming bored. Life is more exciting when there are plenty of new things to learn. There is no such thing as bored only a meaningless life! Bored is an excuse to stay narcissistic and self centred, or addicted or both.

The Dangers of Closed Mindedness in Recovery

A closed mind can be dangerous for people who hope to cover from an addiction and this is taught at all mindfulness rehab centres today. If they already have too many opinions and beliefs about recovery it can get in the way of their sobriety. This is because recovery is a process and not an event. Putting down alcohol or drugs is just the beginning of the process. When people become sober they start to rebuild their life and this requires gaining new knowledge and skills. If people are closed minded this can prevent them from making progress along the path. This is why the best possible attitude for people to have in recovery is a beginner’s mind. That way they will more easily pick up the knowledge they need to make a success of their sobriety.

Beginner’s Mind and Humility; it can be another wonderful asset for people in recovery and it often goes hand in hand with beginner’s mind. Being humble does not mean that people have to subservient – it is not a sign of weakness. Instead humility is all about being honest and open. It means that the individual is willing to admit to their own weaknesses and limitations. The individual does not acknowledge such deficiencies to make themselves feel bad but because they want to be always learning. They have realized that saying don’t know can be the most empowering attitude a human can have. This is why a beginner’s mind is sometimes referred to as don’t know mind.

Alternative Rehab Programs to AA

Several alternatives to AA exist that are more light to get into in nature. The ruth is a process and some people need a soft start. AA has helped a hundred million people easily so it should probably not be taken too lightly. These alternatives to traditional 12-step programs generally ask individuals to find motivation within themselves and to learn internal control instead of seeking an external source of power. Alternatives to 12-step programs also tend to evolve with new research, and they may be more flexible in their approaches than AA and other 12-step groups.

Addiction Treatment requires a beginner’s mind because we have found out an important thing through decades of treating addicts. They are not generally averse to AA or the 12 steps as they are averse to stopping drinking, drugging, or acting out. “I won’t have anything to do with the 12 steps” coming from a person with a 10 or even 20-year addiction problem is ridiculous and foolish. If that is the case with a person, they will need to become willing to stand on their head if it works for sobriety. It is easy to spot the adverse addict. The resistance to the steps soon emerges on several other fronts, slowly unmasking that the aversion is specifically about change. This is the first and hardest step for most people in recovery: admitting that my life is the problem, and the way I manage it has to change. The 12 steps are practiced in different languages, contexts, and formats throughout the world by people who don’t even realize they are working a 12-step program for themselves. What this means is that a sober, healthy, growing, and contributing person is already practicing some form of the 12-step styled living, and the person who is an addict, usually self-centered, victim mentality, and highly oppositional to change and sobriety does not!

Alternative groups still rely on peer support and provide tools for minimizing relapse. Most of these programs are free to join, with the only requirement being that individuals struggling with addiction wish to achieve and maintain abstinence. We love alternatives to rehab centres and alternatives to the 12 steps. we love them because they are all based on the principles and values and ethics of self actualising, sober people who contribute to family, societies and life as a whole. Addiction Treatment requires beginners mind because without humility you will not find addiction recovery nor will you sustain it. Life does not work when fear tales the lead. Only the deeper elements of love are sustainable for each of us. Some common alternatives to 12-step programs include:

  • Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) Recovery.
  • Women for Sobriety.
  • Secular Organizations for Sobriety (S.O.S.).
  • LifeRing Secular Recovery.
  • The Paradigm Process of Addiction Recovery (Mark L Lockwood)
  • Moderation Management.
  • Evidence-based and science-based treatments.
  • Holistic therapies.
  • Experiential therapies.
