PART ADDICT, PART ACTUALIZER

TWO SIDES TO AN ADDICT

There are at least two key sides to everyone, and certainly two sides to an addict. You are physically self or ego and you are metaphysically spirit. This polarity is reflected in literally every aspect of your life. There is light and there is dark, good and bad, fearful and lovingly courageous. This doesn’t strike me as odd in the slightest seeing as most of life is made up of paradox. If there is a sun there is a moon. If there is night there is also day. If there is hatred, there is also love, if there is doubt there is always hope, and at least two sides to an addict. The list goes on. Just like everything else in this world we have light and dark. For the sake of AA and NA recovery and commonality we will call these two sides spirit and ego. Know here and now there are two sides to an addict!

“Call to me, and I will answer you; I will tell you

wonderful and miraculous things that

you know nothing about.

                                                                                – Jeremiah 33:3

two sides to an addict

Ignite the Fire Inside

Let’s look at the consciousness of these two facets, these two sides to an addict. Your ego is the side of you that makes decisions largely based on selfishness. Both want to dominate. The ego wants to rule the whole you and yet so does the spirit. It seems there is a choice here that most of us do not even know exists. The ego wants everything its way. It wants you to take as much as possible and gather for itself things that boost it. The ego wants to win. It is the side of you that needs the compliments, the better car, and the better life and is willing to go to brutal lengths to get it. The ego is the side of you that wants to be right. It wants you to win every argument. It is also the part of you that tries to protect itself by getting you to react and over-react to situations. From the finger gesture aimed at the little old lady that cut you off in the traffic to the feelings of rage as your friends try to show you up are all born from ego. Your spirit is moreover your higher self. Naturally high, not drug high! It is the side of you that will ultimately give you happiness and peace. It is the part of you that is attached to the cosmos. It is your direct connection with the universe and with God, your Higher Power.

You do not want to let your ego rule you, it is disconnected from spirit. It will get you nowhere and will keep you striving and striving without ever giving you any adequate reward. As there are two sides to an addict, you’ll need to actively get in touch with your spiritual side. This effectively means you are going to have to scratch below the surface to find out exactly who you are and what your purpose is. In fact it is relatively easy to spot people who live largely by ego and those who live more by spirit. We have all heard of ego-maniacs. We have also heard of people who are spiritual in nature. The thing is, is that we are always both parts of this sum. We simply need to keep both parts in check.

Two sides to an addict, two paths ahead

We need to consciously raise our level of spiritual awareness over that of our egos now we know there are two sides to an addict. If we want to find true happiness and success we need to live in spirit more than in ego. The ego driven person will always be wanting more and more and is often driven away from any inkling of peace and happiness. They are quick to sacrifice relationships to get ahead and live by the principle that they must grasp all they can to survive. It is a far more rugged and basic side of you that must be kept in check. The simplest way to do this is to live in spirit. By this I mean to live according to your higher self.

It may sound crazy to some but your spiritual aspects are those that are attached to the universe itself. The forces that make the earth spin and the sunrise are the very same that make your eyes miraculously open each morning and your heart beat without faltering. Spirit is the side of you were real growth can be achieved and where real differences can be made to your life and the lives of others. Can you start to see two sides to an addict unfolding here? It is something we need to know as we develop awareness and then acceptance through that awareness. So it becomes clear that we need to focus on this aspect of ourselves that can make real changes in the worlds in which we live that will elevate us to the level of conqueror that we wish to achieve.
